Medical flight from Italy
A medical flight may involve an accompanied scheduled flight, stretcher solution or air ambulance. The terms are not used interchangeably.
Choosing the departure region
Rome, Milan and regional airports offer different connections. The hospital address and total ground transfers determine the choice.
Airline assessment
Fit-to-fly clearance, oxygen, wheelchair and equipment requirements are submitted in advance. A ticket is not medical approval.
Cabin care
Medication, observation and positioning are planned for the entire journey, including waiting time and any possible transfer.
After landing
A Belgian ambulance or adapted vehicle will be ready. The flight only ends once the agreed care handover has taken place.
Documents before departure
Identification, medical summary, current medication and contact details remain with the care team. If the condition changes, the chosen route is reassessed.
Flight medical timeline
The transport physician calculates from the Italian hospital bed, not from the aircraftβs departure. This includes the local ambulance, security screening, boarding, cabin phase and Belgian journey. Medication and battery life include a reserve for delays. An accompanying person receives a brief baseline of consciousness, breathing and pain, together with an action plan for when the condition deviates. The ambulance meeting the flight receives updates through a single operational contact.
