Repatriation after a skiing accident in Tyrol
After a skiing accident, the injury, surgery and mountain location determine how the return journey can take place.
Local situation
Request imaging, the surgical report, cast or brace instructions and weight-bearing instructions.
Transport decision
Rescue from the piste and hospital transfer are not the same as international repatriation.
Route and assistance
A stretcher ambulance or flight choice depends on positioning, pain and transfer risk.
Arrival and handover
Belgian orthopaedic care or rehabilitation follows on from the treatment plan.
Additional point of attention
Skis, luggage and rental accommodation are handled separately from the medical route.
Documents
Identification, a medical summary, current medication and exact addresses remain with the care team. If the condition changes, the route is reassessed.
Separate equipment and piste accident management
Local rescue from the piste is completed before international repatriation begins. Skis, helmet and rental equipment do not go into the treatment area. The hospital records the cast, brace, permitted weight-bearing and the date of the next X-ray. In the event of increasing swelling or loss of sensation, an orthopaedic reassessment is carried out first.
