Care situations in Shkodër and Albania
When a medical situation arises in Shkodër, we discuss three options with the treating doctors: continued care locally, referral within Albania, or an organised return to Belgium or the Netherlands. Shkodër, in northern Albania near the border with Montenegro, is approximately 110 km from Tirana; complex cases are generally referred there.
We quickly provide families with clarity: which medical information is needed, which route is realistic, which level of transport is suitable for the patient's condition and how the journey can be organised without unnecessary delays.
Repatriation
From Shkodër to Belgium or the Netherlands: medically organised
For medical repatriation from Shkodër, we assess the entire route: place of residence or hospital, local ambulance leg, ferry or airport options, medical documents, mode of transport and reception on arrival.
What is most suitable depends on the medical situation: ambulance transport, medical escort on a scheduled flight, a stretcher flight or an air ambulance are all possible options.
Repatriation means that a patient is brought home, to a hospital or to a rehabilitation centre safely and in a medically responsible manner. We consider not only distance, but also comfort, mobility, pain, oxygen requirements, medical handover and practical feasibility.

Ambulance transport
Ambulance transport and transfer from Shkodër
If flying is not necessary or not advisable, ambulance transport often offers a safe alternative — for example, for journeys within Albania, transport to an airport, transfers between hospitals, or even a return to Belgium or the Netherlands if the distance is medically feasible. The SH1 towards Tirana is partly developed like a motorway near the capital, but becomes single-lane in the final section north of Lezhë — despite this uneven road surface, it remains one of the most reliable regional connections, with a journey of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
Depending on the patient's condition, we provide suitable transport with nursing, paramedic or specialised support. Lying-down transport, oxygen, monitoring and handover to a receiving healthcare institution can also form part of the journey.
Medical flight
Medical escort on a scheduled flight from Shkodër
For stable patients, a commercial flight with a medical escort can be an efficient and affordable solution. From Shkodër, we will assess with you which international airport in the area is most practical.
For a departure from Shkodër, Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA) is generally considered, depending on availability and route. The choice of airport is also determined by availability, medical clearance, flight duration, connections and destination. Where necessary, we also arrange assistance, medical documents, escorts and connecting ambulance transport. Allow approximately 1.5 to 2 hours via the SH1 to the south — in the absence of an active regional airport in the north, this is the only Albanian airport with scheduled flights.
Case examples
What a journey from Shkodër may look like
When a patient is admitted to a hospital in or near Shkodër, we request the medical information, assess the condition, consult with the doctors and prepare one or more options. The starting point always remains the same: a safe bed-to-bed transfer.
Stable enough to travel? An accompanied scheduled flight is often sufficient. Limited mobility is more likely to require a stretcher flight or ambulance transport; in serious or unstable situations, only an air ambulance may be suitable.
