Local context
Local medical context in Corsica
Corsica requires a different approach from mainland France. Due to its island location, ferry connections, airport availability, local hospitals and weather conditions play a bigger role in planning.
Sometimes stabilisation or transfer within Corsica is needed first. In other situations, direct repatriation by medical flight, stretcher solution or air ambulance is the safest choice.
Common cases include trauma after falls or accidents, heart problems, neurological complaints, post-operative problems, limited mobility and patients who cannot comfortably travel back via normal tourist connections.

Repatriation
Medical transport from Corsica to Belgium or the Netherlands
For medical repatriation from Corsica, we look at the full itinerary:
residence or hospital, local ambulance stage, ferry or airport options,
medical documents, form of transport and reception on arrival.
Depending on the medical situation, this can be done through ambulance transport,
medical escort on a scheduled flight,
stretcher flight or air ambulance.
Repatriation means returning a patient safely and medically responsible
to home, a hospital or a rehabilitation centre. In doing so, we consider not only distance
but also comfort, mobility, pain, oxygen requirements, medical transfer and practical feasibility.

Case study
Case study: island repatriation after fall in Corsica
A Belgian traveller suffered a complex hip fracture during a stay in Corsica after a fall. After initial stabilisation in a local hospital, the question arose as to how further treatment could be safely organised closer to home.
Due to the island location, ferry connections, airport options, pain control, weather conditions and whether the patient could sit for long periods had to be taken into account.
After medical assessment, a combined itinerary was prepared with ambulance phase, medical documents, transfer to a suitable departure point and medical supervision during the onward journey.
Pre-planned bed-to-bed coordination allowed the patient to be safely transferred to receiving care without family having to combine ferry, airport and hospital communications themselves.
