Is a passport required for international ambulance transport?
This information supports an individual transport file and does not replace assessment or treatment by the responsible physician.
Document depends on route and identity
Which identity documents are required depends on nationality, the countries along the route and current border regulations. Check this before departure with authorised government or consular information sources.
An ambulance does not automatically provide an exemption from identification and border requirements.
Bring the available original
Keep the passport or identity card with the patient or responsible accompanying person, not at the bottom of ordinary luggage. Make a secure copy for the file.
Check validity, name and any residence documents. Report loss immediately so that an emergency procedure can be explored.
Medical documents are different
A medical letter explains the care situation but does not necessarily replace the travel document. Also bring the discharge letter, medication list and contact details for the sending and receiving care providers.
Keep medical privacy information separate from documents needed only for border control.
In case of loss or theft
Report it where required and contact the embassy or consulate. Ask which temporary documents may be available and how long their issuance will take.
Do not book a definitive cross-border route until the document solution has been confirmed.
Check before departure
The coordinator records which borders will be crossed, which document has been checked and who will manage it during the journey.
This prevents a medically prepared ambulance from being held up at the border due to an unclear identity situation.
