From the Åland Islands to elsewhere
How a patient can travel safely abroad from the Åland Islands
Sometimes a patient needs to travel abroad from the Åland Islands for further treatment, recovery, family support or to return home. In such cases, medically correct transport arrangements are what matter most.
Not every patient can simply travel by private transport or on a regular commercial flight. Sometimes professional medical assistance is required, sometimes transport lying down by ambulance, and in urgent or complex situations an air ambulance may be appropriate.
As an archipelago in the Baltic Sea, the Åland Islands cannot be left by road: car ferries to Stockholm, Kapellskär, Turku or Helsinki take between 2 and more than 5 hours and are weather-dependent, making them unsuitable whenever a patient requires continuous medical monitoring. Flying is therefore almost always the safer route — the runway at Mariehamn Airport, more than 1,900 metres long, provides sufficient space for the smaller aircraft used for air ambulance transport, while scheduled connections to Helsinki, Turku and Stockholm Arlanda are easily achievable within an hour for a stable patient travelling with assistance.
For medical repatriation from the Åland Islands to destinations within Europe and beyond, Bryan Morgan Care supports patients and families with one dedicated point of contact, from the initial contact through to arrival at the destination.
