Repatriation / the Åland Islands

Repatriation
from the Åland Islands

From the Åland Islands we organise medical repatriation from A to Z: ambulance transport, medical escort and full coordination within Europe and internationally.

How we organise medical repatriation from the Åland Islands

We support patients and families throughout the entire medical repatriation process from the Åland Islands, including medical coordination, ambulance transport and international transfers.

The capital of the Åland Islands is Mariehamn, home to the archipelago's only hospital, Ålands Centralsjukhus, and Mariehamn Airport (MHQ). With around 121 beds for approximately 6,500 islands, the hospital already refers the most complex cases to mainland Finland or Sweden, meaning that our coordination often continues from that same point.

How a patient can travel safely abroad from the Åland Islands

Sometimes a patient needs to travel abroad from the Åland Islands for further treatment, recovery, family support or to return home. In such cases, medically correct transport arrangements are what matter most.

Not every patient can simply travel by private transport or on a regular commercial flight. Sometimes professional medical assistance is required, sometimes transport lying down by ambulance, and in urgent or complex situations an air ambulance may be appropriate.

As an archipelago in the Baltic Sea, the Åland Islands cannot be left by road: car ferries to Stockholm, Kapellskär, Turku or Helsinki take between 2 and more than 5 hours and are weather-dependent, making them unsuitable whenever a patient requires continuous medical monitoring. Flying is therefore almost always the safer route — the runway at Mariehamn Airport, more than 1,900 metres long, provides sufficient space for the smaller aircraft used for air ambulance transport, while scheduled connections to Helsinki, Turku and Stockholm Arlanda are easily achievable within an hour for a stable patient travelling with assistance.

For medical repatriation from the Åland Islands to destinations within Europe and beyond, Bryan Morgan Care supports patients and families with one dedicated point of contact, from the initial contact through to arrival at the destination.

When is medical transport from the Åland Islands required?

If a patient in the Åland Islands cannot travel independently or safely, medical transport is required — whether for a planned transfer, a return to their country of residence or an urgent medical transfer.

Limited mobility, a recent hospital admission, the need for oxygen, pain when sitting, the need for supervision or further treatment elsewhere are often factors. We assess each case to determine which form of transport is medically responsible and safely feasible.

We arrange the journey from A to Z

Medical travel abroad requires more than transport alone: stability, documents, handover, timing, destination and any airline approval all play a role.

We support you in choosing the form of transport, contacting doctors and hospitals, preparing the medical handover, arranging fit-to-fly documents, ambulance transport in the Åland Islands and, where necessary, onward transport after arrival.

This keeps everything clear for the family, without them having to coordinate with different parties themselves.

Some situations from our cases in the Åland Islands

The situations below, anonymised and partly originating from the Åland Islands, show how diverse medical repatriation can be: from palliative journeys to ICU transport, medical escorts and complex ambulance planning.

Case 1

Ventilated patient following complications during admission in the Åland Islands

Following complications during a hospital admission in the Åland Islands, the patient required continuous ventilation. This required a dedicated air ambulance with specialised equipment, a medical team and close coordination with the receiving hospital.

Case 2

Palliative journey with oxygen to Portugal

A patient with advanced illness needed to be taken to a hospital in Portugal to spend the final stage there. Due to the need for oxygen and limited reserve, this was an extremely vulnerable journey. The journey was carried out by road with oxygen provision, monitoring, medical assistance and continuous assessment en route.

Case 3

Ventilated patient to London

An elderly ventilated patient needed to be transferred to London. Because of the need for ventilation, monitoring and a safe handover, this was not standard transport. The journey required specialised equipment, medical preparation, cross-border planning and coordination with the receiving healthcare facility.

Case 4

Medical escort for cardiac arrhythmia in France

After admission for severe cardiac arrhythmia during a stay in France, the patient was medically stabilised and approved as fit to fly, then accompanied by a nurse on a regular commercial flight back home, with continuous monitoring during the flight.

Departure and care handover for the Åland Islands

This destination requires its own route decision within the international healthcare chain. For the Åland Islands, a plan is drawn up within Aland Islands that fits the type of country and the current care needs.

Equipment is measured and stored without obstructing the medical workspace.

The main journey only begins once the first and final ambulance stages are also feasible.

Responsibility for care only ends after a clear handover to the agreed person.

General airport services never replace necessary nursing or medical assistance.

The patient does not wait in a public area while access is still being arranged. No local facilities are assumed unless they have been confirmed in the case file.

Road transport and any airport route are then compared based on the total bed-to-bed burden. The receiving doctor knows which treatment was provided en route and what follow-up is required.
