Repatriation / Iceland

Repatriation
from Iceland

From Iceland we organise medical repatriation from A to Z: ambulance transport, medical escort and full coordination within Europe and internationally.

Medical repatriation from Iceland: our approach

We guide patients and families from Iceland through the entire repatriation process, including medical coordination, ambulance transport and international transfers.

The capital of Iceland is Reykjavik. Medical flights generally use Keflavík International Airport (KEF), depending on the exact location and destination.

Safe medical transport from Iceland abroad

When a patient needs to travel from Iceland abroad for further treatment, recovery, family support or a return to their place of residence, medically appropriate transport arrangements are essential.

Some patients cannot simply travel by private transport or on a regular commercial flight. In such cases, professional medical supervision is required, sometimes transport by ambulance in a lying position, and in urgent or complex cases an air ambulance.

We assist patients and families with medical repatriation from Iceland to destinations within and outside Europe, with one point of contact throughout the entire process, from initial contact to arrival.

♡

When is medical transport from Iceland required?

A planned transfer, a return to the country of residence or an urgent medical transfer: whenever a patient in Iceland cannot travel independently or safely, medical transport may be necessary.

Limited mobility, a recent hospital admission, the need for oxygen, pain when sitting, the need for supervision or further treatment elsewhere often play a role. We assess each case to determine which form of transport is medically responsible and safely feasible.

These forms of transport are available from Iceland

🚑

Ambulance transport

National and international ambulance transport from Iceland with medical supervision, also for longer distances and bed-to-bed transport.

✈️

Escorted commercial flight

If the patient is stable enough to travel seated, we provide medical supervision on a regular commercial flight.

🛏️

For patients who cannot sit but are stable enough to travel lying down on a commercial flight.

🛩️

Air Ambulance

Rapid medical repatriation via a specialised medical flight in urgent or complex medical situations.

🏥

Bed-to-bed service

From the departure address or hospital in Iceland, through transport and medical handover, to arrival at the destination: we arrange the entire process.

📄

Full coordination

Doctors, hospitals, family, insurers and assistance partners: we coordinate all communication.

We manage the entire process

Transport alone is not enough for a medical transfer abroad. Medical stability, documents, handover, timing, destination and any required airline approval must also be taken into account.

We can advise on the appropriate form of transport, contact doctors and hospitals, prepare the medical handover, support fit-to-fly documentation, arrange ambulance transport in Iceland and, if necessary, coordinate transport after arrival abroad.

This means that the family does not have to contact various parties themselves and the entire case remains clear and organised.

Anonymised case examples from Iceland

The situations below, anonymised and partly originating from Iceland, show how diverse medical repatriation can be: from palliative journeys to ICU transport, medical escorts and complex ambulance planning.

Case 1

Palliative patient from London to Petrich

A 26-year-old palliative patient urgently needed to be brought from London to Petrich in Bulgaria to be able to die at home with family. The situation was highly time-sensitive and could deteriorate at any moment. The transport was organised by road as quickly as possible, focusing on comfort, medical monitoring and a dignified arrival.

Case 2

Palliative journey with oxygen to Portugal

A patient with advanced illness needed to be taken to a hospital in Portugal to spend the final phase there. Due to the need for oxygen and limited reserves, this was an extremely vulnerable journey. The journey was carried out by road with oxygen supply, monitoring, medical supervision and continuous assessment en route.

Case 3

Ventilated patient to London

An older ventilated patient needed to be transferred to London. Due to the need for ventilation, monitoring and a safe handover, this was not standard transport. The journey required specialised equipment, medical preparation, cross-border planning and coordination with the receiving care institution.

Case 4

Complex ambulance planning from a Greek island

For a patient on a Greek island with limited medical infrastructure, transport to the mainland first had to be arranged before the actual repatriation could begin. The planning combined local ambulance transport, a short flight to Athens and then a commercial flight with medical supervision home.

No insurance? We can help in that case too

Do you not have travel insurance or an insurer? You can still contact Bryan Morgan Care directly.

We also provide advice, an assessment of the medical situation and, if desired, a non-binding quotation without insurance. If an assistance partner is involved, we can also support that communication.
