Local planningWhy repatriation differs by Portuguese region
Portugal has an extensive mainland area and island regions. A patient in Porto requires a different route from someone in Lisbon, the Algarve or Madeira. That is why the hospital, postcode, mobility and Belgian destination are first confirmed precisely.
Northern Portugal and Porto
From Porto, a commercial flight or a very long-distance road ambulance can be considered. The hospital route to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, city traffic and terminal time all matter. A short local journey does not mean that the patient can manage the entire cabin journey without medical support.
Lisbon and central Portugal
Lisbon offers international connections, but a hospital transfer within the city requires sufficient time. Airline forms, oxygen, a wheelchair and equipment are reported in advance. Airport assistance supports mobility and does not replace a nurse or doctor when clinical observation remains necessary.
Algarve and Faro
Faro, Albufeira, Portimão, Lagos and the eastern Algarve have different travel times. In summer, heat and tourist traffic affect the collection window. A direct ambulance to Belgium avoids boarding but requires an extensive care and crew plan.
Madeira as an island case
Madeira first requires an air or sea connection. Mountainous island roads, local ambulance transport and airport transfer are coordinated according to the patient’s condition. Medication, oxygen and batteries cover all stages, including delays. Before departure, ongoing care in Belgium is confirmed and the discharge summary travels with the patient.
