Case 1
Child with acute abdominal symptoms during a holiday in Portugal
Professionally guided medical repatriation from Coimbra — ambulance transport, stretcher flights, air ambulance and full bed-to-bed coordination to Belgium, the Netherlands and international destinations.
When a medical situation arises in Coimbra, speed and clarity are what matter most. Bryan Morgan Care coordinates the entire journey from Coimbra: medical assessment, choice of transport method, ambulance transport, medical escort or air ambulance, through to safe arrival at the final destination.
Rather than following a fixed plan, we tailor each journey to the specific medical situation: mobility, pain, oxygen requirements, any recent surgery, infection risk and the fit-to-fly assessment. Practical factors such as the distance to the nearest airport and reception at the destination are also taken into account.
When a medical situation arises in Coimbra, we assess the options together with the treating doctors: continuing local treatment, referral to another centre elsewhere in Portugal, or arranging return to Belgium or the Netherlands.
Coimbra is a university city on the Mondego River and is home to one of Portugal’s largest academic hospitals, making the city a medical referral centre for central Portugal. Its location between Lisbon and Porto makes it relatively accessible.
Repatriation from Coimbra requires a fully planned route: from the accommodation or hospital, through the local ambulance phase and ferry or airport options, to the medical documents, choice of transport and reception at the final destination.
The medical condition determines the choice: ambulance transport, medical escort on a commercial flight, a stretcher flight or an air ambulance.
Repatriation is about a safe, medically responsible return home, to a hospital or to a rehabilitation centre. Comfort, mobility, pain, oxygen requirements, medical handover and practical feasibility are at least as important as the distance itself.
The A1 runs directly past Coimbra between Lisbon and Porto, making the city relatively easy to reach compared with the mountainous inland areas further away. Not every situation requires a flight. Ambulance transport is a safe option for transfers within Portugal, journeys to an airport, transfers between hospitals, and sometimes even return to Belgium or the Netherlands when the distance remains medically appropriate.
We tailor the type of escort — nursing, paramedic or specialised — to the medical condition, as well as stretcher transport, oxygen, monitoring and handover to the receiving healthcare institution.
Coimbra has no airport of its own; both Lisbon Airport (LIS) and Porto Airport (OPO), each approximately a one-and-a-half-hour drive away, are used for international medical flights.
From Coimbra, Porto Airport (OPO) is usually considered, depending on availability and the route selected. Which airport is most suitable also depends on availability, medical clearance, flight duration, any connections and the final destination. Where necessary, we arrange assistance, medical documents, escorts and onward ambulance transport.
For critical, unstable or time-sensitive situations, a dedicated air ambulance may be the only safe option — for example for ICU patients, ventilated patients, severe trauma, neurological problems, complex infections, or when a commercial flight is medically too risky.
An air ambulance is fully tailored to the medical need: team, equipment, route, timing, departure and arrival ambulance, and handover at the receiving hospital.
For patients who cannot sit for long periods but for whom an ambulance jet is not necessary, a stretcher on board a commercial flight may provide a solution. The patient travels lying down, under supervision, and always after prior medical approval from the airline.
Compared with an ordinary flight, this involves more: medical forms, airline approval, planning of the lying position, an escort team, ambulance transport to the airport and reception on arrival.
After a procedure in Coimbra: are you already fit to travel?
Having undergone surgery does not automatically mean that flying or long-distance transport is safe. Pain, risk of thrombosis, oxygen requirements, wound care, infection risk, immobility and possible complications all play a role in this assessment.

Cost of repatriation from Coimbra, with or without insurance
In some cases, payment is handled through travel insurance, a mutual health fund, an assistance company or an employer; other families organise the repatriation entirely themselves. Even without insurance, you can contact us directly for advice and, where possible, a clear quotation.
Our approach: not a lead site, but an operational team
Unlike an anonymous lead site, Bryan Morgan Care is an operational medical transport organisation. Our experience includes international repatriation, ambulance transport, medical escorts, stretcher journeys and complex patient transfers.
How repatriation from Coimbra may proceed
Consider a patient admitted to a hospital in or near Coimbra: we request medical information, assess the condition, consult with doctors and develop options, always focused on a safe bed-to-bed transfer.
When the patient is stable, we generally choose a commercial flight with medical escort; for limited mobility, a stretcher flight or ambulance transport; and in cases of severity or instability, sometimes an air ambulance.
