Repatriation / Ukraine

Repatriation
from Ukraine

Professionally organised medical repatriation from Ukraine, within Europe and internationally: ambulance transport, medical escort and full coordination of the process from start to finish.

How we organise medical repatriation from Ukraine

We guide patients and families throughout the entire medical repatriation process from Ukraine, including medical coordination, ambulance transport and international transfers.

The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv. Ukraine's civil airspace has been completely closed to commercial flights since February 2022. Medical repatriation from Ukraine therefore takes place by land, usually by ambulance to an airport in a neighbouring country such as Poland (for example Rzeszów or Warsaw) or Romania, from where the onward medical flight is arranged.

How a patient can travel safely from Ukraine abroad

Does a patient need to be transported abroad from Ukraine for further treatment, recovery, family support or a return to their place of residence? In that case, it is important to organise the transport correctly from a medical perspective.

Not every patient benefits from travelling independently or taking a regular scheduled flight. Professional medical assistance, transport by ambulance while lying down or, in urgent cases, an air ambulance can provide the solution.

We support patients and families with medical repatriation from Ukraine to destinations within and outside Europe, with one point of contact throughout the entire journey, from the initial contact through to arrival.

In which situations is repatriation from Ukraine necessary?

A planned transfer, a return to the country of residence or an urgent medical transfer: whenever a patient in Ukraine cannot travel independently or safely, medical transport may be required.

Limited mobility, a recent hospital admission, a need for oxygen, pain when sitting or the need for further treatment elsewhere: for each case, we assess which form of transport is safe and feasible.

📄

Full coordination

Contact with doctors, hospitals, family, insurers and assistance partners: we provide full support and coordination.

From initial contact to arrival: we arrange everything

A medical journey abroad requires more than transport alone: stability, documents, handover, timing, destination and any airline approval all play a role.

From advice on the appropriate form of transport to contact with doctors and hospitals, preparation of the medical handover, support with fit-to-fly documents, ambulance transport in Ukraine and, if necessary, transport after arrival: we take care of this.

This means that the family does not have to contact several different parties themselves, and the entire case remains clear and manageable.

Anonymised case examples from Ukraine

Below are anonymised situations from our practice, with examples from Ukraine and the wider region. They show how different cases can be: palliative journeys, ICU transport, medical escorts, stretcher solutions and complex ambulance planning.

Case 1

Repatriation after a stroke during a stay in Ukraine

After suffering a stroke during a stay in Ukraine, intensive medical monitoring was necessary throughout the entire journey home. A carefully planned air ambulance with continuous monitoring and a specialised medical team was chosen.

Case 2

Stretcher transport after a diving accident in Ukraine

After a diving accident along the coast of Ukraine, the patient was unable to sit upright for extended periods. A stretcher place on a scheduled flight was arranged, with prior medical approval from the airline followed by ambulance transport.

Case 3

Medical assistance after thrombosis during a stay in Ukraine

After thrombosis was diagnosed during a stay in Ukraine, caution was required with every form of transport. The patient was accompanied by a nurse on a scheduled flight, with an adapted sitting position and monitoring during the journey.

Case 4

Palliative journey with oxygen to Portugal

A patient with advanced disease had to be transported to a hospital in Portugal to spend the final phase there. Due to the need for oxygen and limited reserves, this was an extremely vulnerable journey. The journey was carried out by road with oxygen provision, monitoring, medical assistance and continuous assessment en route.
